4-year Marine Engineering Degree course

is approved by AICTE and duly recognised and approved by the Directorate General of Shipping. After successful completion of the course a Degree is awarded by U.P. Technical University, Lucknow (U.P. Tech).

Consequent to obtaining the degree and on completion of the mandatory short courses one becomes eligible to take up a career at sea as a junior / trainee engineer. A minimum of 6 months of sea service is then required to be put in on board merchant vessels on completion of which the cadet becomes eligible to write Class IV Part ‘B’ examination (Class IV Part ‘A’ examination, being exempted on the strength of the Degree awarded). Thereafter a Class IV Certificate of Competency is awarded by the Mercantile Marine Department, Government of India. Subsequently, they become full fledged

Engineer officers of Merchant Marine

and are free to take up lucrative careers within the Shipping industry world-wide.
General FAQ' s

Eligibility :
10+2 with PCM 60% aggregate marks from recognised Boards/Universities. Minimum 50% marks in English at 10+2 or 10th level is a must. Fluency in written and spoken English.

Age :
Not exceeding 25 years on the date of commencement of training. (SUBJECT TO DG’S GUIDELINES AS APPLICABLE)

Medical Fitness :

Medically fit with eyesight 6/6, with or without external aids. Maximum power permitted ± 2.5. No colour blindness. All candidates have to pass complete medical examination and mandatory tests prior to joining. IMI has a panel of qualified doctors and professional laboratories specialising in

regulations and requirements as per ILO Convention 147 Seafarer’s Medical Examination.

Selection Procedure :

Those wishes to join through IMU selection must clear the IMU-CET. After counselling based on the merit in IMU-CET, the university will allocate the institute.

For management & vacant seats after UPTU admissions :

IMI undertakes Aptitude, IQ, Reasoning and Psychometric tests followed by an interview. Direct sponsorship by shipping companies are also accepted. The final selection and admissions are subject to the guidelines by IMU.

Course Commences :

Completion of 4 Basic Safety Training Courses
Exempted from MEO Class (IV) Part A Examination
Sea Service for 6 months as Junior / Trainee Engineer Officer
Completion of 3 advanced Safety Training Courses (AFF, PSCRB & MFA )
3 months preparatory course including simulator
Obtain MEO Class (IV) Exam Part (B)
Complete 12 months sea time
Obtain Class II (Part A & B) CoC
Complete 18 months sea time
Obtain Class I CoC
