    About Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS)

    Your Gateway to becoming a Deck Officer in the Merchant Navy

    A 1-year residential pre-sea training programme approved by the Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping), followed by structured onboard training as per Indian Maritime University (IMU) guidelines.

    This programme equips candidates with the knowledge and practical skills required for navigation and ship operations. Training includes navigation, seamanship, cargo handling, ship stability, maritime regulations, and safety procedures through classroom learning and simulator-based exposure.

    Outcome: Begin your career as a Deck Cadet onboard Shipping vessels and progress through recognised ranks to Third Officer, Chief Officer, and ultimately Master Mariner (Captain.)

    Eligibility Criteria

    The Eligibility Criteria at Fleet Management as follows

    • Age: 20 years or less on the date of commencement of the course.

    • Education:
      • Candidates who have appeared for their 12th standard board exams via an Open Board, the NIOS board or through distance learning are not eligible.
      • Minimum Physics-Chemistry-Maths (PCM) marks in 12th Std: 70 % (improvement exam results will not be considered).
      • Minimum English score in 12th Std: 70 % (improvement exam results will not be considered).
      • Not more than two years difference in the year of passing 10th and 12th exams, respectively.
      • Not more than one year difference in the year of passing 12th and commencement of pre-sea training, respectively.

    • Physical Criteria:
      • Height: Minimum 160 centimetres.
      • BMI: not more than 25.
      • Speech and hearing ability to be within normal range.
      • Eyesight 6/6 unaided and no colour blindness.

    • Selection Process :
      • Computer based Test as created by FMTI
      • Personal Interview by relevant panel
      • Medical as per applicable standards & Psychometric tests.
