About General Purpose Rating (GP Rating )
If you have passed your 10th standard and want to pursue a career in Merchnat Navy, then join the 6-month GP Rating program now.
Get theoretical and practical training on General Shipping and Marine Engineering.
GP Rating syllabus includes the combined study of Deck and Engineering subjects. This course covers all aspects of the seafaring profession (Deck and Engine) – Swimming, physical drills, workshop training, rope and mast climbing, lifesaving appliances usage, fire fighting exercises and ship visits.
After completing this course , you will have to give a Board of Examination of Seafarers (BES) examination conducted under D.G Shipping (Govt of India).
Eligibility Criteria
- Age: Between 17.5 and 25 years, as on the date of commencement of the course.
- Education:
- Candidates who have appeared for their 12th standard board exams via an Open Board, the NIOS board or through distance learning are not eligible.
- Physics-Chemistry-Maths (PCM) marks in 12th Std: 50 % (improvement exam results will not be considered).
- Minimum English score in 10th Std or 12th Std: 50 % (improvement exam results will not be considered).
- Minimum Mathematics & science marks in 10th standard :50%
- Not more than two years difference in the year of passing 10th and 12th exams, respectively.
- Physical Criteria:
- Height: Minimum 160 centimetres.
- BMI: not more than 25.
- Speech and hearing ability to be within normal range.
- Eyesight 6/6 unaided and no colour blindness.
- Selection Process:
- Computer based Test as created by FMTI
- Personal Interview by appropriate.
- Medical as per applicable standards & Psychometric tests.

A training school for seagoing cadets was a long-felt need in the north of India, where 60-70% of the seafaring workforce hails, and IMI was born – a unique training institution geared to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow.
