About General Purpose Rating (GP Rating )
Your Gateway to starting a Career in the Merchant Navy.
A 6-month DG Shipping-approved pre-sea training programme designed to prepare candidates for entry-level roles onboard Shipping vessels.
The programme develops practical skills across both deck and engine departments, including seamanship, cargo handling, safety procedures, maintenance practices, and basic engineering functions.
Outcome: Begin your career as a General Purpose Rating onboard ships and progress through experience and certification towards officer-level roles.
Eligibility Criteria
- Age: Between 17.5 and 25 years, as on the date of commencement of the course.
- Education:
- Candidates who have appeared for their 12th standard board exams via an Open Board, the NIOS board or through distance learning are not eligible.
- Physics-Chemistry-Maths (PCM) marks in 12th Std: 50 % (improvement exam results will not be considered).
- Minimum English score in 10th Std or 12th Std: 50 % (improvement exam results will not be considered).
- Minimum Mathematics & science marks in 10th standard :50%
- Not more than two years difference in the year of passing 10th and 12th exams, respectively.
- Physical Criteria:
- Height: Minimum 160 centimetres.
- BMI: not more than 25.
- Speech and hearing ability to be within normal range.
- Eyesight 6/6 unaided and no colour blindness.
- Selection Process:
- Computer based Test as created by FMTI
- Personal Interview by appropriate.
- Medical as per applicable standards & Psychometric tests.
