IMI is the realization of collective dreams. In 1991, 12 eminent professionals from the maritime fraternity determined to pool together resources, expertise, and long broad-based maritime experience to establish an institution in response to the worldwide shipping industry’s severe workforce shortage.
A training school for seagoing cadets was a long-felt need in the north of India, where 60-70% of the seafaring workforce hails, and IMI was born – a unique training institution geared to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow.
Today’s seafarer must hone his skills in an increasingly complex and commercial shipping environment. The IMO, ISO, ISM, and STCW regulations underline quality training and certification of sea personnel for safer ships. The advent of shipboard automation, electronics, and satellites has resulted in the demand for high-caliber personnel to crew modern ships – far outpacing supply. It makes the task of training institutions more exacting and precise.

The International Maritime Institute considers the safety of cadets, staff, faculty, and visitors to be its topmost priority. The Institute has a ‘zero-tolerance policy on all matters about safety.
The Institute appoints select individuals to head the safety committee, which meets regularly to identify safety threats and reports directly to the Head of the Institute. The Institute encourages everyone, including visitors, to report any concerns they may have on safety matters to improve the safety standards within the organization continuously.
