Charting the Course to Leadership : Dr Harry Banga Inspires IMI students

Students and faculty were inspired by a journey that proves leadership is built through discipline, adaptability, and vision.

Is leadership a destination, or a journey shaped by experience and adaptability?

This question set the tone for a transformative two-day visit by Dr Harry S. Banga, Chairman of the Caravel Group, to IMI.

Across both campuses, he engaged with nearly 200 students and faculty members, including close interactions with 20 to 25 cadets. His journey from Master Mariner to global business leader offered a compelling blueprint for leadership rooted in maritime values.

Dr. Banga’s theme, “The Journey from Master Mariner to successful entrepreneur,” was a reflection on how leadership evolves when built on discipline, resilience, and strategic thinking.

His speeches and discussions emphasised that the skills honed at sea viz., adaptability, decision-making under pressure, and a global mindset, are foundational to success in any domain.

He spoke candidly about the sacrifices made during his career, the stress of command, and the importance of mental resilience. He offered practical advice on vessel preferences for junior engineers, shared insights into managing global operations, and discussed the value of experiential learning. His suggestion to arrange ship visits for cadets awaiting placement underscored his belief in hands-on exposure as a catalyst for growth. He also reflected on the changes he would like to see implemented at IMI and the life experiences he believes every young professional should go through to build character and perspective.
The key message he delivered was clear and compelling: Your starting point does not define your ceiling.
For IMI’s current batch of cadets, the institute’s celebrated alumni, and seafarers across ranks and roles, Dr Banga’s was a reaffirmation that leadership is not confined to titles or positions, but begins with values, grows through experience, and thrives on vision.
As the maritime community prepared to observe World Maritime Day, just a day after his visit concluded, Dr Banga’s reflections served as a timely reminder: The future of maritime leadership lies in the hands of those who embrace change, and lead with integrity.
