A diploma in Nautical Science leading to B.Sc in Applied Nautical Science is a one-year course on campus followed by 18 months of training on the ship, making one eligible for a B.Sc. Degree issued by Indian Maritime University (IMU), Chennai.  

ARE THERE ANY EDUCATION LOANS AVAILABLE?

Yes, after getting selected by IMI, assistance is provided for the necessary documentation for the loan. Afterward, one could approach a bank of choice to obtain education loans at favorable interest rates.

IS IMU-CET MANDATORY TO JOIN IMI FOR DNS AND B.TECH?

Yes, the Indian Maritime University Common Entrance Test (IMU-CET) is mandatory since the exam is organised by the  Indian Maritime University, Government of India.

Yes, cadets are mandatorily required to stay on campus. Exceptional circumstances allow students to live off-campus and study online, like the pandemic.

Yes, cadets are supplied uniforms when they join IMI and are required to wear them at all times.

WHAT IS THE MINIMUM PERCENTAGE REQUIRED FOR JOINING A DNS/BTECH COURSE? OR WHAT IS THE ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR DNS AND B.TECH?

Minimum requirement as per DGS is 60% in PCM and 50% in English, However, IMI prefers candidates with minimum 70%.

IS IT TRUE THAT YOUR PROGRAMS ARE HANDS-ON?

Yes, hands-on/experiential learning is an essential part of the training. Students can still expect to spend time in the classroom, but will also have the opportunity to apply knowledge through hands-on work on campus.

HOW CAN I JOIN MERCHANT NAVY AS A TRAINEE MARINE ENGINEER?

To join Merchant Navy as a Trainee Marine Engineer one must complete a BE/B.Tech degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical and Automation Engineering or Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering or Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding or Marine Engineering equivalent from an AICTE approved college.

HOW CAN I JOIN MERCHANT NAVY AS A TRAINEE ELECTRICAL OFFICER?

To join Merchant Navy as a Trainee Electrical Officer one must complete a BE/B.Tech degree (including lateral entry) in Electrical Engineering or Electronics Engineering or Electrical and Electronics Engineering or Electronics and Telecommunication/ Communication Engineering or Electronics and Instrumentation or equivalent from an AICTE approved college.

HOW CAN I JOIN MERCHANT NAVY AS A DECK CADET?

To join Merchant Navy as a Deck cadet one must clear the Selection test, Medical test and Interview of the Shipping company that is sponsoring the cadet along with the All India Common Entrance Test (IMU CET) conducted by Indian Maritime University, Chennai.

HOW CAN I JOIN MERCHANT NAVY AS AN ENGINE CADET?

To join Merchant Navy as an Engine cadet, there are two ways:

  • By clearing the All India Common Entrance Test (IMU CET) conducted by Indian Maritime University, Chennai and completing a four year course in Marine Engineering

OR

  • After completing BE/B.Tech (Mechanical or Naval Arch) from an AICTE approved college and completing 1-year DGS approved GME course.
What do you mean by a sponsored candidate?

IMI has a tie-up with various premier shipping companies.
The candidates are seeking admission to DNS/B.Tech/GME/ETO course register with IMI.
The institute conducts a Pre Screening test and interviews with a senior Master Mariner online. Details of suitable candidates are then forwarded to various shipping companies.
The companies further shortlist suitable candidates as per their eligibility criteria. These candidates must clear the shipping company’s written test, interview, psychometric test, and medical examination (by the shipping company’s approved doctor). The shipping company issues successful candidates with a sponsorship letter. The sponsored candidates are then admitted to the DNS/B.Tech/GME/ETO course at IMI.

WHAT ARE THE OPTIONS IN MERCHANT NAVY FOR A 12TH STANDARD STUDENT OF PCM?

IMI offers two courses for students who have completed standard 12 with PCM, namely Diploma in Nautical Science leading to B.Sc in Nautical Science and B.Tech in Marine Engineering.
