What is this course?
G.P. Rating (General Purpose Rating) is an entry level, six months, Pre-Sea, residential training program. A good mix of theoretical and practical study of General Ship Knowledge and Marine Engineering Knowledge will be provided to you in this course.
If successful, you can score an opportunity to join the merchant shipping in the Deck or Engineering Department. This course is approved by the Directorate General of Shipping, Ministry of Shipping, Government of India.
What to expect during the training program?
You will be trained in both Deck and Engine Room tasks and are employed in either of the departments depending on company’s requirement. You will be expected carry out duties related to Cargo Handling, Seamanship, Operation and maintenance of machinery and general maintenance on deck.
With combined syllabus of all Deck and Engineering subjects, the training program also includes various physical drills, rope and mast climbing, swimming, fire fighting exercises, life saving appliances usage, workshop training and ship visits. This course will give you a preview of how life is on a merchant ship.
What will be the duties of a G.P. Rating?

Vision/ Eyesight:
Color blindness is not permitted. Use of corrective lenses for eyesight is permitted but the maximum permissible limits, at entry, are 6/6 in each eye.
What is the remuneration paid to a G.P. Rating?
Working as G.P. Rating you can expect to be paid a monthly salary between INR 15,000/- to 30,000/-, depending on the company you have been recruited by. Obviously the remuneration will increase with your growth and promotions.
