Life beyond classroom

IMI’s training philosophy is built on discipline, safety, and practical competence.
Through advanced maritime simulators, specialised workshops, technical laboratories,
and hands-on training facilities, cadets gain the knowledge and real-world experience
required for successful careers in the Merchant Navy and global maritime sector.

Engineering & Technical Laboratories

IMI houses a comprehensive range of marine engineering, electrical, automation,
and computer-based training laboratories that support both pre-sea and post-sea
programmes. Designed to replicate the systems and technologies found on modern
vessels, these facilities provide practical exposure that strengthens technical
skills and prepares cadets for shipboard operations.

Facilities Include

  • Marine Engineering Workshop
  • Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) Training Laboratory
  • Electrical & Automation Laboratory
  • Welding and Fabrication Workshop
  • Applied Mechanics & Fluid Mechanics Laboratories
  • Computer and Computer-Based Training (CBT) Laboratories

Advanced Maritime Simulator Training

IMI has invested in some of the most advanced maritime training simulators available,
giving cadets access to the technologies and operational scenarios used across the
global shipping industry. These state-of-the-art simulators provide a realistic,
risk-free environment where students develop practical skills, build confidence,
and gain experience in handling real-world shipboard situations before stepping onboard.
Combining immersive simulation with classroom learning, IMI ensures cadets are well
prepared for careers in the Merchant Navy and the wider maritime industry.

Simulation Facilities

  • Full Mission Bridge Simulator
  • Full Mission Engine Room Simulator
  • Advanced Dual Fuel LNG & MEGI Engine Room Simulator
  • Liquid Cargo Handling Simulator (LCHS)
  • LNG Bunkering & IGF Code Simulator

Ship-in-Campus Training

A unique feature of IMI’s maritime training programme, the Ship-in-Campus is a
purpose-built facility that recreates the environment of a working vessel. It gives
cadets hands-on experience with shipboard systems and operations while still on campus,
helping them understand the realities of life at sea before their first onboard assignment.
Through practical training in navigation, engine room familiarisation, safety procedures,
and emergency response, cadets apply classroom learning in a realistic maritime setting.
This immersive approach builds confidence, operational competence, and professionalism,
preparing students for successful careers in the Merchant Navy and global maritime sector.
