On May 18, 2024, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) celebrated the 3rd International Day for Women in Maritime in New Delhi, honoring the invaluable contributions of women seafarers. This special day is dedicated to recognizing and empowering women in the maritime industry.
This year’s theme,” Safe Horizons: Women in Shaping the Future of Maritime Safety,” underscores the crucial role of women in ensuring the safety and security within the maritime sector.
During the celebration, 27 women seafarers from various marine institutes pursuing different degrees in maritime field and some industry professionals were recognized for their dedication and significant contributions to the maritime industry. These women serve as role models in a predominantly male-dominated field, setting a path for future generations of women in maritime.
Among the attendees were the enthusiastic IMI (International Maritime Institute) girl cadets of DNS (Diploma in Nautical Science), B. Tech (Marine), GME (Graduate Marine Engineer) and CCMC (Certificate Course in Maritime Catering), who were eager to participate in the day’s events. Their visit to Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) was a significant highlight, showcasing the next generation of women maritime professionals.
Secretary of MoPSW, Shri T K Ramachandran spoke about the importance of women in the maritime industry. He honoured the significant contributions of women in maritime sector. Secretary reiterated the theme’s focus on the significant impact women have on maritime safety and the need to continue breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for women in the industry. He targeted on achieving a balanced, diverse, and prosperous maritime community.
The celebration highlighted the essential contributions of women to the maritime industry and emphasized the importance of gender equality as a key pillar for a sustainable future. It aims to promote the recruitment, retention and sustained employment of women in the maritime sector, while raising the profile of women in maritime.
Secretary Shri T K Ramachandran presented bouquets to the girl cadets on the International Day for Women in Maritime. The cadets shared their inspiring journey, further motivating the audience to strive for excellence.
As the day came to a close, there was a palpable sense of optimism and determination among the attendees.
