IMI Celebrates Rashtriya Ekta Diwas 2026

IMI Celebrates Rashtriya Ekta Diwas 2026

The International Maritime Institute (IMI), Greater Noida, commemorated Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day) on 31 October 2026, marking the 151st birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Through a campus-wide Run for Unity and participation in the national Shapath Samaroh (Oath-Taking Ceremony), IMI reaffirmed its commitment to the values of unity, integrity and national responsibility.

As part of the initiative led by the Directorate General of Maritime Administration (DGMA), IMI organised a Run for Unity on campus, bringing together cadets and faculty members. The initiative commemorated Sardar Patel’s contribution to India’s national integration and reinforced the importance of collective responsibility and unity among citizens.

Adding to the significance of the observance, 20 IMI cadets attended the Shapath Samaroh led by the Hon’ble Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal.

The programme commenced with an address by the Secretary, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Shri Vijay Kumar (IAS), followed by the Hon’ble Minister. Their addresses highlighted Sardar Patel’s immense contribution and sacrifices towards nation-building, underscoring the importance of unity and national integration.

An important highlight was the opportunity for cadets to interact with Shri Vijay Kumar and Capt. Poswal. The discussion offered valuable insights into the aspirations, opportunities and challenges shaping careers in the Merchant Navy.

The cadets shared their motivations for choosing a maritime career, including opportunities for early financial independence, competitive remuneration, international exposure and long-term career growth. The female cadets also spoke about their aspirations and determination to pursue careers at sea, challenging traditional gender stereotypes and contributing to a more diverse maritime workforce.

The interaction also covered practical aspects of maritime education and career progression. Shri Vijay Kumar enquired about sponsorship processes, entrance examinations, eligibility criteria, course structures and mandatory sea-time requirements.

The exchange provided a meaningful platform for cadets to place their experiences and concerns before senior maritime leadership, while bringing greater attention to the academic, regulatory and professional aspects of seafarer development.

As future maritime professionals, IMI cadets carry forward the spirit of unity, resilience and collective progress — values that are as important at sea as they are in nation-building.
