| Completing an intensive year of technical training and maritime discipline, 40 Graduate Marine Engineering cadets are ready to take the next step towards their seafaring careers with Fleet Management Limited.
The International Maritime Institute (IMI), Greater Noida, held the Passing Out Ceremony of GME Batch 44, marking the successful completion of their Graduate Marine Engineering programme. The ceremony was attended by Chief Guest C/E Rajeev Sarang, General Manager, Fleet Management Limited; Mr Tushar Sharma, Deputy General Manager, Fleet Management; C/E Rajesh Trivedi, Vice Principal, IMI, along with faculty members, staff members and cadets of IMI. Building the Foundation for a Changing Maritime Industry Welcoming the graduates, C/E Rajesh Trivedi, Vice Principal, IMI, congratulated them on reaching this important milestone and highlighted the transformation underway in the maritime industry. He spoke about the growing influence of digitalisation, automation, artificial intelligence, alternative fuels and sustainable shipping practices, emphasising that future marine engineers must combine technical competence with adaptability, continuous learning, problem-solving and an uncompromising commitment to safety. Presenting the GME Batch Report, C/E Arvind Agrawal, HOD – Engineering, highlighted the batch’s achievements and participation across academics, sports, cultural activities and other aspects of campus life. The report reflected the cadets’ all-round development and their contribution to the institute during their training. Preparing for the Realities of Life at Sea In his keynote address, Chief Guest C/E Rajeev Sarang reflected on the cadets’ transformation from graduate engineers into disciplined and capable Trainee Marine Engineers. Drawing on the realities of shipboard operations, he outlined three essential principles for their professional journeys: humility to learn from experienced crew, absolute ownership of safety, and mental resilience supported by teamwork and camaraderie. Emphasising the responsibility that comes with working in an engine room, he urged the graduates never to compromise on safety or take shortcuts, and to speak up whenever they encounter an unsafe situation. As he reminded them, “There is no shame in asking a question; the only fatal mistake is assuming.” He also highlighted the industry’s transition towards greener and more technologically advanced shipping, including dual-fuel engines, alternative fuels such as LNG, methanol and ammonia, energy-efficiency technologies and automated monitoring systems. He encouraged the graduates to become technically proficient and environmentally conscious marine engineers who embrace innovation while upholding the highest standards of safety. Addressing the cadets on their next phase of training, Mr Tushar Sharma, Deputy General Manager, Fleet Management, emphasised the importance of carrying forward the discipline, professional conduct and safety consciousness developed at IMI into their everyday responsibilities on board. “As you step on board, make safety your first priority. Carry forward the discipline developed at IMI, stay curious and learn from experienced seafarers. Fleet Management remains committed to supporting you through your professional journey. Make every opportunity count and build your careers with responsibility and confidence.” His message reinforced the importance of continuous learning and the support available to seafarers as they transition from institutional training to the practical demands of life at sea. Recognising Excellence and All-Round Achievement The ceremony recognised outstanding performance across academics, conduct and campus life, with the following cadets receiving awards:
The recognitions celebrated not only academic commitment but also the qualities of teamwork, leadership, sportsmanship and personal responsibility that are integral to a successful career at sea. The programme also featured a Life at IMI video presentation, cultural performances by cadets and a farewell address by a graduating cadet, reflecting on the experiences, friendships and learning that shaped their time at the institute. A New Chapter Begins As the graduates prepare for onboard training with Fleet Management Limited, they carry with them the technical foundation, discipline and professional values developed at IMI. Their next phase will take their learning from the training environment to the engine rooms of operating vessels, where practical experience, sound judgement and a commitment to safety will shape their growth as marine engineers. The transition to life at sea will bring new responsibilities, challenges and opportunities to learn. With a strong foundation, the guidance of experienced seafarers and the continued support of Fleet Management, the graduates are well placed to build rewarding careers in the maritime industry. |
