IMI Celebrates 80th Independence Day with Fervour, Patriotism and Maritime Pride

The celebrations commenced with a flag-hoisting ceremony, followed by a spirited march past by IMI cadets, reflecting discipline, unity and pride. The atmosphere was further enlivened by a vibrant patriotic programme featuring mesmerising song and dance performances by the children of mariners and IMI cadets.

The event was graced by several eminent personalities from the maritime industry, including Capt. Sunil Nangia, Capt. Indresh Kharbanda, C/E Rajesh Singh and Mr. Tushar Sharma from Fleet Management Limited, among other distinguished guests.

Addressing the gathering, Capt. Saurabh Varsheny, Head of Institute (HOI), IMI, spoke about the significance of Independence Day and urged the cadets to understand the immense struggle, sacrifices and determination that went into securing India’s independence. He encouraged the young cadets to contribute meaningfully towards nation-building and reminded them that, as maritime professionals, they have a unique opportunity to carry India’s flag across oceans.

“As maritime professionals, you have the opportunity to carry the Indian flag across oceans. With that opportunity comes a responsibility—to uphold the values, reputation and pride of our nation wherever your profession takes you,” Capt. Varshney said.

In his address, Capt. Indresh Kharbanda reflected on the significance of the occasion, saying, “Today, the ocean itself seems to echo our pride as India celebrates 80 years of Independence.” Calling upon the young cadets to recognise the opportunities before them, he said, “This is your time. Dream big, keep learning, stay disciplined and be ready to take responsibility.”

Capt. Kharbanda also called upon the maritime community to carry the spirit of India wherever they sail, urging them to pledge that “wherever our ships sail, India sails with us; wherever we work, India’s reputation goes with us; and wherever we go, let the Tricolour fly high—in our actions, in our achievements and in our hearts.”

Echoing the spirit of the occasion, C/E Rajesh Singh said that Independence Day evokes a distinct feeling of energy, gratitude and patriotism. Speaking about the maritime profession, he described it as one of the most rewarding career choices, offering a strong balance between professional and personal life along with significant opportunities for growth.

The celebrations also extended beyond the ceremonial proceedings, with sports competitions organised for cadets across disciplines including basketball, badminton, weightlifting and table tennis. The sporting events reflected the institute’s emphasis on discipline, teamwork, fitness and a healthy competitive spirit.

The 80th Independence Day celebrations at IMI were a fitting tribute to the nation’s freedom and a reminder of the responsibility that comes with it.
