IMI is the only maritime institute in North India amongst many B tech marine engineering colleges in India which conducts this 4-year degree course affiliated to Indian Maritime University (IMU) Chennai.

This course is duly recognised and approved by the Directorate General of Shipping and AICTE.

Candidates become eligible to take up a career at sea as a junior / trainee engineer after completing B.Tech( Marine) and mandatory STCW courses. After 6 months of sea service on board merchant vessels, they become eligible to write Class IV Part ‘B’ examination (Class IV Part ‘A’ examination, being exempted on the strength of the Degree awarded). Thereafter a Class IV Certificate of Competency is awarded by the Mercantile Marine Department, Government of India.

Subsequently, they become Certified Engineer officers of Merchant Marine and are free to take up lucrative careers within the Shipping industry world-wide.

ELIGIBILITY

10+2 with PCM 60% aggregate marks from recognised Boards/Universities. Minimum 50% marks in English at 10+2 or 10th level is a must. Fluency in written and spoken English is expected.

AGE

Minimum age : 17 Years Maximun age : For Male : Gen-25 years, OBC(NCL)-28 years, SC/ST-30 years For Female : Gen-27 years, OBC(NCL)-30 years, SC/ST-32 years

MEDICAL FITNESS

Medically fit with eyesight 6/6, with or without external aids. Maximum power permitted ± 2.5. No colour blindness. All candidates have to pass a complete medical examination and mandatory tests prior to joining. IMI has a panel of qualified doctors and professional laboratories specialising in Merchant Navy regulations and requirements as per ILO Convention 147 Seafarer’s Medical Examination.

SELECTION PROCEDURE

Candidates must clear the IMU-CET examination held at All India level. During counselling, the Institutes are allotted based on the merit in IMU-CET and candidates preferences.

COURSE COMMENCES

Aug/Sept every year.

CAREER FLOW CHART

  1. 10+2 with PCM
  2. Application, Interview/Selection, Medical/Eyesight
  3. 4-year course at IMI including simulator trainings
  4. Completion of 4 Basic Safety Training Courses( Get Exempted from MEO Class IV part A, COC)
  5. 6 months as Junior Engineer onboard ship
  6. Obtain MEO Class IV part B,COC
  7. Sail as Certified Engineer on Merchant ships for 12 months sea time.
  8. Obtain MEO Class II (Part A&B) COC
  9. Sail as Second Engineer on Merchant ships for 18 months sea time.
  10. Obtain MEO Class I COC
  11. Eligible to sail on Merchant ships as Chief Engineer
